If we have not left slavery, life as we know it, in order to follow God’s call on our lives and surrender to His will, we find that there is darkness along the way.
There was just so much that the Israelites were also facing during this transition moment in their lives, which is why I believe that we should always use the Bible as a reference point which we can apply in our own lives.
When we begin to see the Bible as an example, we will find that there are a lot of similarities, just like in the story we are drawing from, because we too were in some form of slavery, entering into the place where God had destined for us. In all honesty, we too have complained at some point, especially when everything seemed to be going wrong in our lives after we had surrendered to Him.
Surrendering to His will and His call is an adjustment, a difficult one at times, which is why God sends us His Spirit to lead us, be with us, and remind us that we are not alone. We just need to learn to listen to it. I know that it’s not an easy task, especially in the beginning stages when you have to adjust your mindset to the change in routine and the struggles that pop up along the way.
At times, you may be progressing with hope only to find your past chasing you down, because it surely will, in a literal sense, at times, the same way Pharaoh and his army came after the Israelites. Your past will come after your life, because it doesn’t want you to go into your destiny nor walk towards your "promised land", which will not be necessary land at times, but your promised destiny. We all have one, this figurative "promised land" which God has attached to our lives.
So, when He frees us, we must fully let go of the past and not groan every time something goes wrong in our lives, saying, "There were graves back in my old life"; because, truth be told, there were graves, sometimes literal ones. There were graves attached to the old way we used to live, before we surrendered to Him, but there is freedom, so much freedom to be experienced in the life He is taking us to.
As easy as it is to think and observe that we did not suffer as much as we are right now, that "I had a good paying job" or "yes, I was unhappy in that relationship, but at least I was not lonely, because right now I’m so lonely."
You will be tempted to start saying all these things, considering all that you once had before you gave your life to God, not knowing that when you hold onto that promise and take note of everything that God is doing, the provision of His fire, which is with us and lighting up our way, will be abundantly provided.
We'll see that He hasn't abandoned us and that He didn't release us from our previous situations only to leave us unhappy and broken.
